So I got... Far Cry 2 and it's pretty neat. I saw the trailer for the game on TV and figured I would give it a try. The graphics are pretty good, the combat has a nice feel to it. The game takes place in Africa and you have to use the brush and cover effectively before moving in on target locations, once you start stacking nigger corpses to the ceiling you are more free to roam.

The enemies aren't particularly difficult to dispatch, it's just planning your approach and setting up so you don't get trapped/ambushed/blown up that takes the skill. For example, I had a mission to attack a Villa and take some dude hostage, and the first time I tried to go in through the dock by his back porch and turned a corner and was spotted/shot at by like 7 guys in the boatyard and got iced out. Bad. Next time I went through the back stairwell into the upper tier of the villa and smoked it out from the inside. Success. Things like that effect how well you do.

The game reminds me a lot of Grand Theft Auto to be honest. It's first person but you are basically in "Warzone African Village" and you have to do missions for drug lords and crime bosses and whoever else wants to have something/someone killed/blown up. It's very free going. You can collect diamonds to buy more guns (there are 50+ guns you can only carry 3 at a time though), you can kill people and take their houses to use as safe houses (save points). The vehicle driving/gunning handles pretty poorly but you don't need to do much in the vehicles besides get from point a to point b and if you crash one you just kill someone and take theirs.

The protagonist (you) has malaria, which makes you at the start helpless but to find someone who can get you medicine, and then from there it kind of serves as a mechanic which causes motion blur and may have some other storyline significance that I haven't seen yet.

All in all it was pretty fun, it gets the adrenaline going trying to scout out and pick apart a base of enemies in a way that you don't usually get from mow-em-down first person shooters, but on the other hand, there's enough action to not make the game complete queer town like Metal Gear Solid.

Apparently there's a multiplayer too but I have not tried that yet. Anyways if you want some sneaking, scouting, and sniping action, it's worth a look.

In case you were wondering...

ya I bought it and its pretty fun. Multiplayer is good too, DM, Team DM, capture the diamond (lol), and uprising (leader of each team has to capture and hold points or something). Ranman got it as well and he hates driving all over the place. I joke with him thats its really Grand Theft Africa. Quote

blowing up shit like the guard posts from afar with a sniper rifle then runnign in with an uzi to clean shit up makes you feel liek a complete badass. but that gets kind of repetitve.

pretty fun game though, I'm up to the second map bit thingy. but now i acquired fallout 3 so we'll see how that goes. Quote

I was starting to get into it, but then I got Fallout 3, and I had to play that instead.

I can see how it can get a bit repetitive after a while, so I think it might be a game you take in discrete chunks. Quote
