HOLY BALLS.

This game looks fucking awesome. You can buy it off steam for like $50 with access to the beta.

It's a MMOFPS. It has pvp and pve content. You can either buy it one off, with no subscription, and play it just like you would a normal mmo with pvp games. Or if you pay the subscription ($12.99 american, but you get a month free if you preorder on steam), you get to play pvp matches that can capture persistant territory for your agency/alliance.

Whatever. From the video's I watched, it looks fucking awesome.

Like an even better version of planetside, that looks like it won't be so faction imbalanced because it's like guild vs guild.

I'd totally get it if 3 other people did. This looks like something I could play during the quiet hours at work, with americans, and in the afternoon with aussies. Quote

Is it out now? I thought it wasn't coming out till like 2010. Quote

Nah. =\ Preorder on steam now for beta access. Beta starts on the 7th January. Releases on 2nd February.

Really thinking of icing it out. Quote

I may get this, looks fucking sick Quote

If it's anything like Planetside, you can count me in. Fucking loved that game... Quote

Don't think its large scale like planetside. It looks like a cross between unreal tournament, left 4 dead/borderlands, and your generic mmo.

Personally, I'd just like to play a mmo where its also a fps. Sounds kinda neat. Quote

Ah I had thoguht I was gonna be a large scale environment but now I hear it might be lvl based so I might not be getting it afterall Quote

Posted Posted: 2 years ago

it's obviously ut & the results from each round go into "capturing" or "loosing" territory.

der. Quote

Posted Posted: 2 years ago

Yeah, its level based. Higher levels unlock better equipment/more customisation.

Dunno. Still sounds kinda good for a small scale thing. I mean, even if it was a large scale thing, how many of us would actually play it, and actually be on at the same time.

Considering pve is like 4 player co-op, pvp is team matches, and the subscription content is with max group of ten... I don't think it'll be too bad for us.

I'd still like to try it. For nothing else than I just have to spend $50, and you get 80% of the total games features with no subscription required, and I'll be able to get into the beta to see how it is as well. Quote

This is my problem. And I've been following this game since they announced it.

Basically, their goal was to remake Planetside

and what they realized the could actually accomplish was basically doing a UT-clone shooter with territory level zones. So it's like playing a gigantic game of tc_hydro in TF2 (territory control). Quote

Even some of the damn armor looks like it was from the Vanu Sovereignty. Quote

All Points Bulletin seems promising... and from what I understand, it will be free. Quote

how does that work? I am intrigued! Quote

I read this on the internet about it:I was in the alpha, been in several phases of closed beta, got involved with a lot of people pre-beta, had a TON of clans joining up in a group I can't mention for a website I can't mention, and since we all got access to beta, we've all been slowly but surely disenchanted with the game as a whole. There's absolutely nothing redeeming about it. There are counterstrike mods and free hl2 multiplayer mods that are far better.
Obviously I'm under an NDA and I can't give specifics, but here's the gist of it: Everything that made the game unique and had us all excited was dropped. Their subscription method is all too familiar (LOLgate London, anyone?) and none of us (the 500+ gamer group I was affiliated with, my own clan included) are currently pre ordering, or even continuing to participate in the beta as it continues. This game is not worth your time, it's not worth your money, and it's not going to revamp the face of MMOs as we know it.
I'm also not some jaded gamer. I played UO since launch, gave that up for SW:G, bounced around between lineage2, played WoW at launch, and I've been in almost every major beta test for an MMO thats come out since early 2008, including Warhammer and Aion.
TL;DR, game is shit, MMOs need to go back to the drawing board, this is not the droid you are looking for.

I got it on Steam last night. It's in open beta for people who purchase early, and you can cancel it before Feb 1st if you don't like it and get a full refund. I joined the SomethingAwful.com Goon Clan and played with them last night. It seems pretty fun. It's a blend of a lot of stuff you've seen before but never quite really in the same package. It also seems like a pretty good blend of casual and competitive. Here's a log of what I did last night so you can get a feel:

Bought the game, it downloaded very fast, and I got in ~9PM. They said the server was going to shut down at 10PM for a 24-hour major patch, but that didn't happen until Midnight so I got to play for a few hours, and they said it should be up tonight in prime time so I'll hopefully get some more in. The one thing that convinced me after watching a bunch of the gameplay vids is how enthusiast and attentive the developers are. The core team all posts on the forums and answers questions but doesn't pay attention to dumb shit. Some examples are that they listened to complaints about respec costs and eliminated them completely. Bodes well for the future of the game, unless the dev team turns out like the Warhammer one and all gets shit canned as soon as the game is launched. There's only one server where everyone plays together and battles each other.

So I get into the game and log in. Loaded fine, you can pick Recon (which is like a blend between Sniper/Spy in TF2) Assault (which is like a mix between Demo/Soldier/Heavy in TF2 with MMO style tanking) Robotics (which is like you build battle stations, robots, drones, and shoot things) and Medic (which has poisons and heals beams). I chose Medic obviously.

The "starter zone" intro levels are some of the best I've seen in an MMO. It's not grinding or questing, it's a storyline thing similar to most single player FPS. You get rescued by some dudes as a naked newblar and then each level from 1 to 5 you get new weapons and you learn the motion/combat system, etc. while smoking lots of robot dick.

The game is all in 3rd person, which I thought would suck cock but works better than I expected. The movement system is a lot like Grand Theft Auto with a Jetpack and with a free FPS aiming system. It's really that simple. You have 8 skills on your bar (Melee weapon, Ranged weapon, Healing beam, and Jetpack) are your core ones as a Medic (I didn't play the others). You can only have one weapon out at a time and they have a left and right click ability (like TF2 sorta). You also have Grenade/Self-Heal/AOE on 1 minute timer which are independent of the "one weapon at a time rule" and a Morale ability like Warhammer and then a survival skill which is like "Heal yourself a lot real fast while hamstringing yourself so you can't escape easily" I think is mainly a downtime reducer and emergency survival thing. Every one of your 8 slots is changeable, and each slot has 3 or 4 different items that can go in them. So you can mix a heavy DPS or heavy heal set, the tank duders can run an explosives or machinegun or full defense set. There are a lot of combat options. And the combat is pretty fluid.

The graphics are a bit weird, but I didn't tweak my video settings at all so I could have a bad setup and not even realize it. The environments look spectacular, the player models and animations look pretty bad (they actually look almost identical/ripped off from Hellgate London). I'd say the former outweighs the latter but then again everyone is also walking around wearing armor to the WOW-equivalent of [Tattered Loin Cloth of the Monkey] so maybe people will look sweeter with better gear. The UI is also bad, but the Devs have posted saying they are going to overhaul it in the next week, we will see if that happens. The text chat box is a bad font that is hard to read (not sure how this happened), the action bar and skill panes are very good, but the party frame is janky and heal targeting (just like TF2 medic) is sometimes janky and I lock on a target trying to heal a different one which is frustrating (but the same thing happens with TF2 medic when like 3 guys all hump each other in front of your medic beam).

The gameplay is all instanced. It essentially drops you into Fallout Dalaran Survival Factory City and you do all your vendor / training there. You can queue up for 3 gamestyles. a Free PVP Battlegrounds type mode - 5 different play styles and lots of different maps, the first one I played was basically "Arathi Basin on an Oil Rig" which was fun. I haven't tried any others because I haven't unlocked them yet or they aren't available at my level.

The PVE missions are like "Easy/Medium/Hard/Superhard/Dicksawing Hard" I tried Easy and Medium. They are about what you expect. You get a group of 4 people and chainsaw fuck robots and mercenaries for about 10-15 minutes and then you are done and you have lots of random shit and maybe one or two good things and some XP. It's a fun diversion. I'd say that it has more in common with L4D than Borderlands. There's pretty much no downtime. You enter, and then you are rocking on rails for 10 full minutes without a single break. Shit jumps out at you, teleports in behind you, there are death traps everywhere (but you can respawn) and it is pretty exciting but might get repetitive quickly. You never have to do PVE if you do not want to, and it is mostly a diversion for experience and quick co-op fun (like Warhammer in premise, kind of like Hellgate/Borderlands in execution).

The most important shit is the Conquest Mode, which is like, there's 5 continents, each continent is only open for 2.5 hours every day (1 afternoon US, 1 primetime US, 1 late night US, 2 european zones) I don't know if they have any Aussie shit or how the game timezones will work for that. I was playing with the clan I joined on the primetime continent and it is laid out on the map like a Hexboard, there are about 100 territories on the map, and you roll over them like a big live game of Risk with your clan. We started with 2 territories at 9PM and won a bunch before it ended and the servers went down. Once the continent "closes" the zone locks and you own all the territory until it re-opens the next day, so you can persistently fight over the shit and try to own a continent. My only complaint was that every single map we played was the same one (basically a Base which we attacked), I don't know if that was the product of attacking the same shit, or if there just aren't a variety of maps for this mode, or what. What happens is you control territory and you bid on enemy territory and then you land a dropship in it and start fucking it up. They have 2 minutes from the time you land to "arrive" and defend it. Only one time did we not see a defense, every other game the clans we tried to steal from all defended. Then you move through like a UT-style assault mode, you shut down the front of their base, capture their towers, capture their generator, etc. and then you own it. From what I read eventually there will be different style zone-bases and you collect resources from owning them with some ultimate goal, I dont know and I dont care it was pretty fun to have big battles and steal things from other clans.

I got up to Level 7 that's it, from what I understand there is either 50 or 100 levels but I don't know which but I read that you cap out on skills/weapons at lvl 30. Every level so far I have unlocked a new weapon or skill when leveling up, so that part is a lot like COD rankups, then you pick your kit/set for battle. However the leveling and skilling is really just increasing weapon options and skill choices. I held my own fine as a Level 7 Healer playing against Lvl 19-29 damage dealers. From what I can tell, there's no reason that people of all levels cannot play together from the start to the end of the game. That's nice.

The main problem with games like Hellgate and Borderlands was that it was hard to get anyone together on the same page playing with each other and there was no PVP. This game is PVP-based, while still having a co-op mode that is equal to or superior to HGL/Borderlands (better combat and co-op than HGL / faster paced than Borderlands). The main problem with other games we played like Warhammer was that even though it was PVP based you often couldn't find action and the action you did find was disappointing. I think they have done it right here, in that you own territory and you constantly instance/re-instance to immediately get action against other clans. I'm willing to sacrifice the "World Exploration/Travelling forever looking for something to do" part of the MMO genre in exchange for the "constantly fucking shit up 24/7 from the time I log in to log off" which is what we have here basically.

If anyone has any questions I will try to play some more tonight and tell more about it. So far I like it, but we'll see if it holds my attention longer than a few weeks. Quote
