i quite enjoyed it, giving it a second play through now and doing more of the side quest shit. I never really played the ones before it that much to really compare them so how does it stack up?

I certainly am impressed by the level of depth in the world though -- it's absolutley massive and quite detailed. Quote

Played for over 40 hours, been to almost ALL the locations, was really fun. Problem for me is that I have collected 10 bobblehead dolls and read a ton of books (with the comprehension perk for +2 to skill) so I have 5 skills maxed and the rest are 80+ except barter, unarmed, and speech. Not much of a reason to remake a guy unless I wanted to choose different ways to complete the quests. Killed all 5 super mutant behemoths. Overall I completely burned myself out playing this game, but loved every minute of it. Quote

I just "got" it the other day. I played it for a little bit, but haven't gotten into it substantially at all yet. Quote

On it's own it's a pretty good game. There's a bucketload of horrendous design flaws that preclude it from being great. As a Fallout game, it's an abysmal failure. I am having fun, but there are so many issues. I may be overly critical due to my favourite games being Fallout 1 and 2, but still, there's a lot of stupid things. I wrote a long list of flaws (I didn't mean it to be this long... god damn) in the most nonpartisan manner I can handle.

The writing is absolutely terrible
The trademark dark ironic witty humour is missing. I haven't lolled out loud once (except for Gary!)
SPECIAL has been bastardized and simplified
The writing is shit
A lot of the voice acting is pretty terrible
As a result of bad writing/bad voice acting, none of the characters are particularly memorable (Three Dog is an exception)
I haven't finished the game yet, so I'm not really sure how it makes sense how the Enclave are even in DC. Maybe it makes sense later.
Terrible dungeon design - a good example is vault 108 (maybe 106). A large dungeon with almost no points of interest at all. Badly fleshed out back story, no interesting loot and plenty of empty room. Pretty bad game design.
Too many fucking metro stations with bad lighting
There's no sense of fear. In the originals, super mutants, deathclaws packs, super mutants and enclave patrols would make you shit your pants because they would tear you to bits. You really had to work to get yourself to a point where you could kill them. There's no sense of achievement when I'm ripping all these things to shit within the first hour. They had a chance to do this with the behemoth, but then they have you killing one as soon as you see it. When you first see Frank Horrigan in Fallout 2, you just know that he's a bad motherfucker, and those dudes he's with are fucking badasses.
Absolutely terrible writing
No fear! No matter where I am, I can instantly pop back to a city and be assured of making it to a bed and being healed to full. Making it back from the edge of the wasteland with no stims, no ammo and no health should be a harrowing experience
And what the fuck is up with one hour in a bed completely healing EVERYTHING?
For a post-apocalyptic wasteland, it doesn't feel very lonely or dangerous. This is partially due to fast travel
Power Armour training? I need to train to put on a suit of armour? Good game design would dictate that if you don't want people wearing it early, you don't create situations where people could feasibly get it at that point. Artificial cockblocks (especially one that didn't exist in previous games) are just lazy.
There isn't much in the way of moral grey area choices
They fucked SPECIAL up, it's too easy to do everything. There's no real agonizing choices. The bastardization of tag skills is partially to blame
Combat is so simplified from the originals. There's no penalties/cost for taking stimpacks during combat, and you can shoot people in the head fairly reliably right from the beginning of the game. There's no real tactics or strategy to be found in it.
The way weapon damage scales with weapon skill and weapon degradation is stupid.
The fatman is pretty silly. The only time the originals had nuclear explosions was to destroy each final area. It's dark irony you know; the thing that doomed humanity is now used to save it.
The bit in the story where I'm sure you're supposed to feel emotional and all that, bad pacing of that scene leads to no emotional impact at all
Clothes that give stat bonuses doesn't really make sense in a sci-fi RPG
Mirelurks look like they should be in Oblivion
The third person camera view is shitty. They said they wanted to make it viable but the people assigned to fixing that just jerked off to shark attack footage
The speech system seems a bit odd. Intelligence and charisma responses don't appear to be especially charaismatic or intelligent (chalk it up to bad writing I suppose). Speech gamble are just weird. Hell, charisma shouldn't even give more speech options, it should make people more inclined to listen to you and do what you ask
THE WRITING SUCKS.

There are some good things.

Radiation is handled very well. I quite like it.
GNR radio is pretty entertaining.
GARY GARY GARY

Yeah, I like playing it. But I don't think I'll have any real passion to replay it. I finished the originals at least four times each, as well as many extra aborted playthroughs. One of the most interesting was one Fallout 2 where I didn't kill a single person. This has pretty much made me want to play those games again. Quote

from seeing this game played and playing a bit myself it hink the game looks average at best. But I am sure I will end up getting it as soon as I build my new comp. It will be a good time killer over winter break and a good way to test out my new hardware. I hope to god that there will be some sick mods for the computer version by then. Quote

I killed everyone in the vault and peaced out that shit was for homos. Quote

I'm getting this on PC with the basic assumption that the community will mod it (with or without mod tools) and make even better shit for it.

As it stands, the copy protection is acceptable (minimal) and the game seems decent enough for playing. Quote

I've been loving the game, been playing it at a steady pace throughout the past week or two. I've realized that the main storyline must be avoided to some degree in order to enjoy the rest of the game.

On the positive I love the RAD system along with the leveling system and perks. For the first 5-10 levels of the game I was much more of a scavenger trying to hoard as much ammo as possible, but beyond level 10 I've had ridiculous amounts of ammo so my character is now op.

My final thought about the game, even though I haven't beaten it yet, is that the game is great for the first 10 levels then becomes really really easy from then on. From lvl 10-17 I've just run around blowing people's faces apart with the Lincoln Repeater, Ol' Painless, and a bunch of the other specialized weapons.

Another problem I have is that like Oblivion the game is very easily exploited to make the passing of the game signifigantly easier. My friends and I started a game the other day and decided to nuke Megaton of course, but we decided to kill and loot the whole place first and boom from the starting level just getting out of Vault 101 we were lvl 6 by the time we were ready to nuke Megaton, only doing the Super Duper Mart quest before raping the town's innocence.

My biggest problem with the game is some of the quests are very unclear and confusing at times. That would result in me just exploring the general map which is alot of fun, but sometimes I much prefer to do sidequests.

A must do if you are evil is bring the shop owner at Paradise Falls 20 Chinese Assault Rifles...it honestly took me like 6 levels to find 20 of those sons a bitches but the store gets a shit load of ammo, weapons, and caps after you get him all 20 rifles.

I do like Fallout 3 very much, just as much as Oblivion...but each is very unique in their own respects so I can't put one over the other. Quote
