Has anyone used this?

http://www.ubuntu.com/

It's linux. I'm a huge nerd but I've never really tried to figure out anything related to linux. I've read a lot about it and it sounds pretty cool. I might give it a shot this weekend and fuck around with my PC. Quote

Yeah, it snot bad. They make it easy to try out because they can install from in windows and do up ur MRB and shit so u can boot into it without having to partition/format shit which is handy for first timers and ppl who just wanna check it out without committing fully to it.

Apart from that, its just another linux distro with some fixed up gui things. Still nice to start with and even use. Quote

I use kubuntu (http://www.kubuntu.org/) pretty much a KDE version of it. If you a familiar with Linux it then its pretty standard as brent said, but these distro's do make it a bit easier to convert over. Initially had some issues with getting WOW working on it with dual monitors but thats all sorted now.

The only major issue I kept having was with wireless networking (wired networking was no prob) and therefore my beloved INTERNET. Firstly there is/was issues with drivers that need to be set up. Some easy to use guides that can get you going with that are at http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/joomla/. Since we all NEED internet to live, have a look at it before you do an install then try a live CD to see if your internet can connect manually/drivers are available for your network hardware first, then do an install if you have all the shit you need to get internet ready and waiting (you can mount ntfs drives in linux to access it from a download to a windows partition easy enough). Just so you can go back to an internet connected PC for help if you can't get it working. Once you have internet again then learning to use linux is easy with google! The second issue was I used WPA/WPA2 to authenticate which was not initially supported. They do provide a decent network manager that does attempt to manage it automatically now(connects/authenticates and all that shit) but for me it crashed once (i may have done something ?) and then BAM, it would never work again. It may be fixed with a newer version but I just have a start-up script that turns all the shit needed on and connects manually. Ignore most of that shit if you have direct connection to internet as it will connect automatically in nearly all cases!

That IMO is the best thing about Linux, if you are a nerd you can tinker with things and have control of everything. But that can also be bad when you do tinker and fuck everything to bits. Quote

The ubuntu community is pretty helpful, give them a shout if you run into trouble. It's pretty easy to install, getting 3D drivers and mp3 playback installed is the hardest part. Quote

8.10 is comin out soon, thinkin about trying it on my laptop and getting way crazy. Quote

You shouldn't have to use ndiswrapper unless you have a super new wireless adapter or a super old wireless adapter. I have 3 laptops with me in iraq and all of their wifi cards have native linux drivers. I can use even my PCMCIA no-name card and USB wifire with just the drivers included with the 2.6.24 kernel. I use 8.10 at work, it's pretty nice. I had to strip out some of the bullshit utilities that didn't work right. Dual monitors was borked with the app bar for a week (they fixed it). The ATI drivers still won't work with dual monitors. Overall I didn't have any other serious problems except manually installing my own Java plugin so it didn't freeze running half the applets out there and I still have a sound codec problem in the non-free adobe flash plugin (I just download the FLVs and watch them in standalone - since I'm busy working and don't have time to deal with it).

Those are all the negatives, if you know what running Linux can be like, you know that's high praise. Everything else pretty much just worked. And if I wasn't developing on the system, I wouldn't have had to do as much messing around as I did. Quote
